Pope Francis’s last public appearance leaves profound message

Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, prompting a day of mourning for millions globally. Just a day prior, he made a poignant final public appearance, delivering a frail yet sincere Easter blessing from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.

Due to his declining health, Cardinal Angelo Comastri presided over the Easter Mass, and a message was conveyed on the Pope’s behalf, emphasizing the need for peace, compassion, and religious freedom. He notably addressed the suffering in Gaza and the rise of global antisemitism, calling on the world to uphold human dignity.

Having recently been hospitalized for double pneumonia, the Pope missed most of the Holy Week events but managed to greet visitors one last time on Holy Saturday.

As the first Jesuit and American pope, he was a strong advocate for social justice, interfaith dialogue, and inclusivity. His legacy will be remembered for its emphasis on mercy, humility, and steadfast support for the marginalized.
