The family, hailing from Barcelona, had taken a joyful photograph moments prior to departure, positioned on the helipad with smiles and souvenir bags in their possession. They entered the helicopter for what was expected to be a standard sightseeing excursion on Thursday, April 10. Unfortunately, the flight concluded tragically just 15 minutes later.
The incident took place at 3:17 p.m. when the Bell 206 helicopter took off from the Wall Street Heliport. Observers noted that the aircraft initially headed north towards the George Washington Bridge before executing a rapid, sharp turn to the south. Shortly thereafter, it lost control and plunged into the river close to Hoboken, New Jersey.
Online video footage depicts the helicopter descending in a swift, angled spin. Fragments of the aircraft seemed to detach mid-flight, prompting speculation about a possible mechanical failure. The debris struck the water near the Manhattan shoreline, visible to shocked onlookers who promptly summoned assistance.
Observers characterized the event as both shocking and surreal. Dani Horbiak, who witnessed the crash from her residence, reported hearing noises resembling gunfire in the sky, succeeded by the sound of falling debris and the helicopter’s ultimate descent. Additional witnesses recounted a powerful sonic boom and observed the rotor disintegrating as the aircraft fell.
Emergency personnel, comprising the NYPD and FDNY, swiftly arrived at the location. Rescue teams retrieved the helicopter that had sunk in the river; however, all six individuals on board had unfortunately perished. Medical examiners were observed extracting the bodies of the victims later that same day.
