Peck had dedicated 19 years of his career to serving as a customer service agent for Delta Airlines at Salt Lake City International Airport but was seeking a new direction in life. Following his divorce and the beginning of a new relationship, he felt that a job change would complement his fresh start. At the time of the catastrophic accident, he was en route to Los Angeles for a job interview. Upon learning of the crash, his fiancée, Andrea Katz, along with his family residing in the Los Angeles area, rushed to the scene.
His body was recovered from the wreckage 12 hours after the incident. However, during the first 11 hours, his family received 35 calls from him. He reached out to his brother, stepmother, fiancée, son, and sister, but all they could hear was static. When they attempted to return the calls, they were directed to voicemail, which was unusual. Despite this, the calls from Peck instilled a sense of hope in his loved ones that he might still be alive but trapped in the debris.
“You look at your phone and it’s Dad!” said Peck’s son, CJ, in a 2008 interview with Daily Breeze. “He can’t be dead.”
His sister, Barbara Lopez, remarked, “For us, it was just hope. We had no idea he had already perished.”
Even though the calls went to voicemail, Peck’s son left multiple messages, expressing their love and assuring him that help was on the way. Ultimately, Peck was located through the signal from his mobile phone. He had only one stop remaining before the tragic collision.
The most perplexing aspect of this situation was that the coroner concluded Charles E. Peck died instantly upon impact, with no possibility of survival, not even for a brief moment, during the 11 hours in which the calls to his family were made. There are differing opinions regarding the phone’s unexpected behavior; some think it began to malfunction and dialed contacts from the speed dial list, while others view it as a supernatural occurrence.
Nevertheless, his family took comfort in these calls, with his son interpreting them as a sign from his father, reassuring them that he is no longer in pain.
